Q: When and how did you become interested in data science?
I became interested in data science after taking a summer course in Python programming at Vassar. I completed a project analyzing the effect of invasive swans on underwater vegetation, and I loved it. It was the first time I really understood how new information can be created.
Q: Choosing a doctoral program is a big decision. Why did you choose UVA’s Ph.D. in Data Science?
I chose UVA’s Ph.D. in Data Science primarily because of its available courses on ethics within the program. Additionally, I was drawn to the research opportunities in the medical domain. And because I enjoy the mountains.
Q: What areas of research interest you and why?
I am interested in research within the domain of medicine, given my experience in biology, veterinary medicine, and as an EMT.
I am interested in how highly predictive machine learning models can be enhanced to improve their explainability. This concept was something I found lacking at my previous job, where I trained machine learning models for a health insurance company.
Q: What do you hope to do with your data science degree?
I hope to produce new information/knowledge to better public health through ethical research - whether that's through academia or industry, I still do not know.
Q: What advice would you give to prospective students considering a Ph.D. in Data Science?
Make sure to brush up on your linear algebra if it's been a while!
Q: What are your initial impressions of the school, faculty, and other students?
My initial impressions of the school are good - everyone is friendly and helpful. The classrooms are very cold. I am most excited about starting research and I anticipate challenges prioritizing my time.
Q: What is a fun fact about yourself?
I've assisted in surgery on a porcupine.
