UVA Data Science Ph.D. Recipient Honored at International Conference
The University of Virginia's School of Data Science is pleased to announce that Kevin Lin, who received a Ph.D. in data science from UVA in May, won the award for best presentation at the 11th International Conference on Bioinformatics Research and Applications, known as ICBRA 2024, which was held in Milan, Italy, earlier this month.
Lin was recognized for his presentation on the extremity ranked domain selection and full factorial design approach for a dataset pertaining to eosinophilic esophagitis that was a focus of his dissertation defense.
This marked the third time Lin received recognition for a presentation at an international conference in the past year. Last September, Lin's discussion of a paper he co-authored with Don Brown, his faculty advisor and the senior associate dean for research at the School of Data Science, and other UVA collaborators was selected as the best presentation at ICBRA 2023 in Barcelona.
In March, his presentation on a paper he wrote titled “Diffusion and Multi-Domain Adaptation Methods for Eosinophil Segmentation” was honored at the International Conference on Machine Vision and Application held in Singapore.
Lin was invited to be a speaker at next year's ICBRA conference, which will be in Prague.
Lin was part of the inaugural group of graduates to be hooded for a Ph.D. by the School of Data Science earlier this year. The program was launched in 2022. At graduation, Lin won the Z Society's Edgar F. Shannon Award, given to the exemplary graduating student from each school at UVA
Lin, who was sponsored by the U.S. Air Force during his time at the School of Data Science, also received an M.S. in applied mathematics from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 2019 and a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Washington in 2017.
