Combination Degree Options

University of Virginia graduate students in select programs have the opportunity to complete the residential M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) alongside their current graduate program. With the MSDS, students will learn the skills and techniques to apply data-driven techniques to their respective field.

Applicants for the combination degree programs are encouraged to apply in the Priority Round, but otherwise follow the same application process and are considered on the same basis as all applicants to the MSDS Residential program. Learn more on the MSDS Residential Admissions page and the Funding Your Graduate Degree page.

MPP/MSDS

Earn both a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from the Batten School of Public Policy and the MSDS in just two years. The MPP/MSDS combination degree program is designed for students who desire to gain expertise and work in fields of data science and public policy. Students will combine hands-on policy experience and the concepts of leadership with computer programming, data wrangling, analytics, and data science skills to maximize potential across sectors.

MBA/MSDS

In 33 months, earn both a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Darden School of Business and the MSDS. The MBA/MSDS combination degree program is designed to provide MBA candidates with the opportunity to acquire in-depth understanding of data science tools and techniques to apply to the field of business.

Students enrolled in the Darden MBA may apply for the MSDS program in their first year of student. If admitted under the combination program, they will spend their second year doing MSDS coursework. Under the program, Darden will count 7.5 credits from the MSDS to satisfy MBA elective requirements.

MSDS/M.D.

Current students in the University of Virginia School of Medicine may request a leave of absence to complete the MSDS Residential program. Medical Students who pursue the MSDS should expect to begin their MSDS courses after completing Phase 2 of the SOM curriculum and to extend their education by 1 year; see the SOM's Combined Degree page for more information.

MSDS/GSAS-Ph.D.

Current Ph.D. students in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences have the opportunity to take a leave of absence to complete the MSDS Residential program, which typically happens in their second or third year in the program. Applicants are encouraged to work with their Ph.D. advisor to plan their leave of absence.
