Set Yourself Apart: MSDS Application Insights from Data Science Admissions
At the School of Data Science, we've designed our M.S. in Data Science Residential Program (MSDS) application to truly showcase your unique experiences, motivations, and perspectives. We want to get to know the person behind the application. We want to know the real you. Your application should be an authentic representation of your journey. Let your personality and unique voice come through in every part of your application.
Helpful Hints from our Admissions Team
- Plan ahead! The best applications have some thought put into them. Plan your application materials – letters of recommendation, transcripts, and financial aid forms. Thoughtful planning will ensure you have everything in by the deadline.
- Let your resume tell a story. We look for more than just academic or work history. Your resume is a great way to show us your engagement in a variety of activities. Include leadership roles, volunteer work, family responsibilities, civic engagement, or any personal coding or research projects you're proud of. Avail yourself of resources like those provided by the UVA Career Center.
- Connect with your recommenders early. It should be someone who knows you well, can speak to your preparedness for the program, and how you will contribute to our community. Reach out early to give them plenty of time to complete their recommendation – and always follow up with a thank you!

FAQs
Before you apply, review some of the most frequently asked questions from prospective students about the admissions process and application materials.
Is the optional essay actually optional?
Yes! The optional essay is not required; however, some applicants may benefit from providing additional information. You can use the optional essay to discuss positive dimensions of your background or to provide insight and/or context regarding other aspects. Not writing the optional essay will not be counted against you.
What is the GPA minimum?
At the School of Data Science, we know that data doesn't always tell the full story – often, it's the starting point to ask better questions. That is why we don’t have a minimum GPA. GPA is a part of getting to know you – it is not an accurate predictor of your graduate academic success.
Can you provide an informal or unofficial evaluation of my credentials to let me know my chances of being admitted?
No. We only evaluate completed and submitted applications after the application deadline.
When should I apply?
The MSDS Residential program runs August-July, with one annual application cycle. We offer two application options: Priority Decision and Regular Decision. The Priority Decision is for those wishing to be considered for early admission and need-based financial aid. Priority applicants will receive an admission decision in early March. Applications received after the Priority deadline will be considered in the Regular Decision round and receive an admission decision in early April.
How do I know if I have satisfied the prerequisites?
Check the list of Prerequisite Key Topics to find the exact topics you are expected to learn in each prerequisite course. These are foundational skills you will need to start the program.
