The M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) program at the University of Virginia's School of Data Science is renowned for its rigorous curriculum and practical focus. To delve deeper into the application process, we spoke with three current MSDS students: Disha Trivedi, Courtney Hodge, and Hannah Valenty.

  • Be authentic! Rather than trying to write what you think sounds “right,” focus on expressing who you truly are and what matters to you.
  • Show your focus and passion. Sharing the impact you hope to make in data science helps us better understand your motivation and why you’re drawn to this program.

  • Apply Priority Decision. If you are seriously considering the MSDS program at UVA, try to apply by the priority decision deadline. That way, you’ll be considered for early admission and, most importantly, need-based financial aid.
  • Plan ahead. I recommend giving yourself as much time as possible to finish your application. This means starting early and staying persistent. We know life gets in the way, especially while working or completing school. But, if you plan ahead and carve out time weekly, you’re more likely to submit a great application. Good luck and stay optimistic!

  • Talk to your recommenders early! Your professors or supervisors have busy schedules just like you do, so give them plenty of time to submit a recommendation. This takes the stress off both of you.
  • Use your resources. If you know any family or friends who have recently applied to graduate school, reach out and hear what their experience was like. Feel free to reach out to the MSDS Ambassadors too—we’re happy to share our application experience.
