What made you choose UVA for your master's in data science?

During the application process, UVA specifically stood out to me because of the program ambassadors. Though I was nervous to jump into a rigorous data science course load coming from a psychology background, both the student ambassador I had many conversations with and the faculty and staff in the School of Data Science assured me that I would not be left behind.

I am a firm believer that having a foundational background in psychology will make me more conscious of the ethical implications behind data science and artificial intelligence technologies, which is a great skill to bring to the table and share with colleagues. Having classes every day of the week is a great structure for me, as I typically learn through practice and repetition when it comes to coding. I’m hoping to better understand the backends of algorithms through both math and coding, so I can one day be both an ethical and technical asset to a data science team in the “real world”.

What are your research/career interests?

I’m fascinated by the intersection between psychology and data science, more formally known as behavioral/social data science in academia. Throughout my time at U of R, I became heavily involved in a sense of belonging research project, contributing through my studies on the mutual relationship between faculty and student belonging.

I would love to be able to combine my interests in both these fields for the betterment of the human experience, especially now with AI and other advanced technologies looming over our heads. Since I don’t know specifically what that would look like just yet, I also can see myself working as a data scientist in the entertainment industry and know that I would feel a sense of pride seeing that my efforts are serving as a happy distraction from people’s hardships.

What are you involved in outside the class?

Outside of the realm of data science, I work at UVA’s music library in Old Cabell Hall. I love all things music, so this job has been a peaceful distraction from the stress of coursework for the past few years (I worked at U of R’s music library as well!). I love singing and have been part of several choirs and a cappella groups in the past, so I am always down for a karaoke night. A newer interest of mine is playing the guitar! I try to take 15-20 minutes out of the day to practice playing some of my favorite songs.

What made you choose UVA for your master's in data science?

I chose UVA for the master’s in data science program for a multitude of reasons.  My mom works here in the UVA Hospital System, so it’ll be nice to be closer to family; I am coming here from DC, so I won’t be too far from my friends; UVA and the Data Science school are famous for their educational quality; and the curriculum aligns with my career goals, i.e., classes in a range of data-related disciplines plus a capstone project all packed into 11 months.  Bring it on.

What are your research/career interests?

My career goal is expertise in AI and neural networks, so I intend to push my limits applying these technologies to cryptology, geographic information systems, and other difficult technical challenges in the defense/intelligence/national security sector.

What are you involved in outside the class?

Apparently, people have these things called “hobbies,” and they do them outside of work/class to “relax.” Jokes aside, I have been working on slowing down and leveling out the work-life balance/getting my brain out of work mode. To do this, I have been finding joy in working out, reading, playing Nintendo Switch, spending time with friends, solving puzzles, playing board games, practicing drawing, and hanging out with my cat. Here on Grounds, I intend to be involved with the LGBTQ Center and the Honor segment of Student Self-Governance

Always Eating: Just about anything.  I love local restaurants, diners, upscale restaurants, bar food, craft beer, wines from around the world... as long as we can avoid cilantro, raw onions, anything with more than four legs (ew, David.), and keep it under four Thai chilis, I am probably down to try it.

Always Listening: I have a wide range of musical interests that vary as time goes by.  In the car or in the gym, I’m probably listening to pop, EDM, big band/New Orleans jazz, electro-swing, and/or various soundtracks (movies, video games, etc).

Currently Reading: Horror novels. I mostly stick to fiction, and I tend to latch onto authors rather than genres.  I read across the spectrum of horror, mysteries, thrillers, graphic novels (an underrated medium IMO), historical fiction, and even some limited fantasy and science fiction.  One of my red flags is I tend to dismiss “classic” literature in favor of newer works written to be more accessible to modern audiences, and I try to make sure my bedside table is balanced with works by women, people of color, queer authors, etc.

What made you choose UVA for your master's in data science?

I loved how rigorous and tightly prescribed the curriculum is – and that it is always adapting based on student requests and the changing field. I was searching for a program with an industry capstone and was impressed by the quality of work produced by UVA MSDS students.

I admired that the program was within its own School, meaning we could learn statistics for data scientists, computing for data scientists, etc. Finally, everyone here, including the admission ambassadors with whom I spoke, seemed very happy.

What are your research/career interests?

The intersection of energy, pollution, and the environment with public health and healthcare. I hope to have the title of Data Scientist.

What are you involved in outside of class?

I run the UVA MSDS running club, volunteer with a UVA ESL (English as a Second Language program), and am auditing a Spanish course here.

Currently Reading: I'm trying to expand my horizons with non-fiction books as opposed to my usual fiction go-tos. Recent reads have included Kingdom of Characters (how the Chinese language changed with modernization and American/European influence), The Age of Deer (our relationship to this domestic-adjacent wild animal), and Because Internet (how the internet has changed the rules of language across the world).

What made you choose UVA for your master's in data science?

I chose UVA’s master's in data science because of the strong sense of community I saw when researching the program. Students, alumni, and faculty all seemed deeply invested not only in advancing data science but also in making it accessible to a wide range of people. I wanted a program that was both rigorous and comprehensive so that I could strengthen the foundations of data science while also allowing me to explore my own interests. Since I only minored in data science as an undergraduate, I knew there was still much more I wanted to learn. UVA’s program stood out to me as one that equips students with the skills to succeed in the field while also encouraging us to pursue our individual passions.

What are your research/career interests?

I’m still in the process of defining my exact research and career interests, and that’s one of the main reasons I want to pursue my master's at UVA. Data science is such a broad and versatile field, and I’m excited to use this program as a way to explore different applications and discover where my strengths and passions align.

That all being said, there are several areas that already stand out to me. I’m very interested in business analytics and cybersecurity, particularly when it comes to working with large and complex data systems. At the same time, my undergraduate experiences in political science have kept me connected to issues such as sustainability and public policy, where I see tremendous potential and demand for data scientists.

Ultimately, I hope to leave UVA with both the technical expertise and the clarity to focus my career in a direction where I can meaningfully contribute, while staying open to the interdisciplinary possibilities.

What are you involved in outside of class?

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy being active, and I'm currently training for a half-marathon, so when I'm not running, I'm simply working out. My father and I have recently built our very own at-home gym, so I'm always using my free membership. I’m also an avid gamer, and I play any and all types of games – you name it, I've played it. Beyond those hobbies, a large part of my time is dedicated to volunteer work as a translator. I speak Japanese and French, and I’ve contributed translations for niche companies and media, particularly in the areas of video games, comics, and anime/television shows. I also work with a nonprofit that focuses on making code accessible across languages, which involves translating technical materials and researching coding terminology from around the world. This work has been both challenging and rewarding, but it combines my love for language with my interest in technology.

Always Listening: I have a really wide range of music interests, and I enjoy almost every genre. One day you’ll find me listening to R&B artists like SZA, Solange, or Brent Faiyaz, and the next I might be deep into K-pop with groups like Twice, New Jeans, or Le Sserafim. I also have a big appreciation for rock and metal bands: Deftones, Korn, and System of a Down are some of my favorites. I’m always ready to share or receive recommendations.

Currently Reading: I love reading horror, and right now I’m working through the original Jurassic Park novels, which are much scarier and more intense than the movies. At the same time, I’ve been exploring the works of Han Kang, who recently won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her books The Vegetarian and Human Acts are among the most impactful works I’ve ever read. They have put me on an emotional roller-coaster, but I never want to get off.

What made you choose UVA for your master’s in data science?

What drew me to UVA’s program was how intentional the School of Data Science is about defining data science itself. In a field where “data science” gets thrown around as a buzzword, UVA’s 4+1 model of data science – value, design, systems, analytics, and last but not least, practice – really set them apart from other programs I was considering. The commitment to teaching and practicing responsible and ethical data science is woven into how they fundamentally approach the discipline. The cross-disciplinary faculty and well-rounded curriculum, grounded in real-world data & hands-on experience, precisely demonstrate just that.

I decided on the residential program because of its cohort-based model and the amount of support I felt I would have to succeed in this rigorous curriculum. The diversity of our cohort in our backgrounds, experience levels, and disciplines means that we’re constantly learning from one another, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of data science. The School is also home to an incredible student success team, focused on your personal well-being, sense of community, and professional development. I felt so welcomed by faculty and previous admissions ambassadors, like they were sending this subliminal message, “Please take up space. You belong here.”

What are your research/career interests?

I have been working as a data analyst for Chesterfield Public Library for the past four years (support public libraries!). I’m looking to pivot toward data science roles, especially at the intersection of data science and public policy. I’m particularly drawn to opportunities in the nonprofit sector or governmental agencies where I can apply data science for social impact. I’m also interested in AI governance and data ethics, since it’s increasingly critical that these technologies are implemented responsibly and serve communities equitably.

What are you involved in outside the class?

I am admittedly a serial hobbyist, though most recently it’s been crocheting, ceramics, and PC gaming. Cooking and baking bring me the most joy though – food is my ultimate love language and I love hosting. I’m also taking group tennis lessons at Snyder, looking to up my game!

Always Listening: Laufey (my Icelandic-Chinese queen!)

Currently Reading: AI 2041 by Chen Qiufan and Kai-Fu Lee (a really interesting collection of imaginings of our future as it’ll be shaped by AI systems)

What made you choose UVA for your master's in data science?
I chose the UVA master's in data science because I liked the multi-disciplinary aspect of learning data science and seeing the impact on the world around us! Knowing the complete scope and implications of the data and its subsequent analysis results in a better understanding of the problems we try to tackle.

Additionally, the shorter length of the program was another positive aspect, since we can quickly join the workforce. Finally, the cohort setup of the program was another huge positive aspect. The tight-knit community is a crucial aspect of learning, and the connections and friendships the MSDS helps foster will continue even after our program.

What are your research/career interests?
My research/career interests are in machine learning and data ethics. I took some classes in machine learning as a data science minor. I liked the consideration and thought, as well as the interpretation of the results, that goes into machine learning algorithms.

Data ethics is an intriguing, yet not as highlighted, aspect of data to learn since it is very applicable and present in the modern day. In the future, I want to explore the applications of machine learning in the medical field, hopefully tying it back to my undergraduate major in cognitive science.

What are you involved in outside the class?
Outside of class, I’m involved with UVA Ballroom Club and hanging out with friends. I was introduced to ballroom dancing during my undergraduate, and I’m loving it! I also love to try new foods and travel!
