Connecting data, athletics, and human performance across the University of Virginia
Sports Data Science at the University of Virginia (UVA) brings together researchers, students, coaches, clinicians, and partners to explore how data can improve performance, health, fairness, and decision-making in sport.
This site is your hub for sports data science at UVA, connecting prospective students, faculty, industry partners, alumni, and the broader community. Explore research, academic programs, student organizations, collaborators, events, conferences, philanthropy opportunities, and ways to get involved. Together, these efforts reflect UVA's commitment to rigorous, responsible, and interdisciplinary data science in service of athletics and the common good.
The HOOS (Health, Outcomes & Optimization in Sport) Innovation Lab advances human motion science, sports performance, and translational data research at UVA. Bringing together biomechanics, sports medicine, physiology, and data science, the lab connects UVA Athletics and the School of Data Science to turn data into insights that improve performance, support injury recovery, inform decision-making, and advance responsible innovation in sport. This flagship research initiative is led by Assistant Professor of Data Science Natalie Kupperman.

Explore interdisciplinary research advancing sports performance, health, injury prevention and human movement through data science, artificial intelligence and collaborative innovation.

Discover courses, hands-on research, capstone projects and experiential learning opportunities that prepare students to solve real-world challenges in sports data science.

Collaborate with faculty and students through research, consulting, data partnerships, internships and philanthropy to advance the future of sports and human performance.
The UVA School of Data Science hosted its first Sports Research and Technology Innovation Summit in 2025, marking a bold step forward in connecting academic research with industry applications in sports science, human performance, and athlete health.
The next Sports Research and Technology Innovation Summit will be held in Spring 2027. Check back for further details.
