Why philanthropy matters

Philanthropic support helps UVA expand what is possible in sports data science. Donor investments create opportunities for students, accelerate innovative research, strengthen partnerships with sport organizations, and provide access to the data, technology, and infrastructure needed to translate ideas into practice. These gifts help prepare the next generation of sports data scientists while advancing research that can improve athlete health, performance, and the broader active lifestyle experience.

How we engage with industry

We partner with sports organizations, technology companies, and other industry leaders to address meaningful problems through research, education, and data science.

• Ph.D. fellowships: Organizations can support doctoral students conducting sustained research at the intersection of data science and sport.
• Research projects: Industry partners can collaborate with UVA faculty on research projects that evaluate technologies, develop new methods, and generate novel insights.
• Data sharing: Partners can make datasets available for research and education under appropriate privacy, security, and governance agreements, helping advance discovery while preparing students to work with complex, real-world data.
• Capstones: Organizations can sponsor an applied challenge for a team of M.S. in Data Science students, who work closely with the partner to develop and communicate a data-driven solution.
