The School of Data Science applies data science and AI to strengthen democratic institutions and improve government services, including national security and defense. Researchers work on projects to guide the responsible use of AI in public policy. These efforts support initiatives for smart cities, digital governance, and civic engagement.


Public Interest Tech

Public Interest Technology is the study and application of technology expertise to advance the public interest, generate public benefits, and promote the public good. The School of Data Science was founded with the goal of applied data science and machine learning for societal benefit.

Our faculty and students carry out research and capstone projects for the benefit of organizations like Legal Aid Justice Center, Charlottesville Fire Department, Housing Navigation, and the Charlottesville City Street Light Network.

Researchers at the School of Data Science contributed to the creation of policy benchmarks for smart cities, helping governments evaluate and mitigate the impacts of AI on urban life and public services. Our faculty, along with colleagues in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, have helped integrate data across social services, health, and criminal justice institutions locally in Charlottesville and Albermarle County. The School co-sponsors workshops with the Cooper Center for city and county leaders across Virginia to learn how to use data for effective management of services.

Data Science and AI are increasingly important to national security and defense. School of Data Science researchers contribute to threat detection, defense logistics, and explosive materials research in collaboration with security agencies like the DCSA and the DIA at nearby Rivanna Station.
