At the School of Data Science, our research is loosely grouped into four core domains — Analytics, Systems, Design, and Data + Society — which are all applied in a fifth domain called practice. The practical applications are comprised of: Government and Democracy; Society and Culture; Health and Medicine; Environment and Nature; and Business and Markets.
Analytics
Analytics at the UVA School of Data Science centers on uncovering insights from complex data using advanced statistical and machine learning methods. Researchers develop predictive tools and tackle core questions in AI while solving real-world problems across diverse fields.
Systems
The UVA School of Data Science focuses on building scalable, secure, and efficient data infrastructure. Researchers create high-performance computing systems and distributed architectures to support advanced data analysis.
Design
The UVA School of Data Science emphasizes human-centered approaches to the representation, visualization, and communication of data. Researchers develop intuitive interfaces, transparent algorithms, and accessible visualizations that make complex information understandable and actionable.
Data + Society
The UVA School of Data Science explores the societal impacts of data and technology. Researchers examine ethics, privacy, policy, and the social effects of AI to guide responsible innovation. The School is committed to ensuring data science serves the public good.
