Research Without Walls

The University of Virginia School of Data Science pursues high-impact research to further discovery, share knowledge, and change the world for good. Our faculty apply data science methodologies to a wide range of domains, often working with researchers across Grounds.

At the School of Data Science, our work is organized into four core domains—analytics, systems, design, and data + society—all of which come together in a fifth domain: practice. These domains represent broad areas of focus that are deeply interconnected and foundational to the field of data science.

Faculty research often spans multiple domains and is inherently interdisciplinary. Drawing on statistical, computational, and philosophical approaches, our scholars collaborate across a wide range of fields, including biomedical science, engineering, education, business, and imaging, to advance knowledge and drive real-world impact.
