Is this position paid?

Yes. Students receive a stipend, travel support, and free dormitory housing (double-occupancy room).

Am I eligible?

Rising Junior or Senior students pursuing an undergraduate degree at any accredited higher education institution in the United States are eligible if they are a US citizen or permanent resident.

Students of all majors are invited to apply. See the minimum qualifications for the project or projects you would like to work on, and make sure your personal statement and transcript provide evidence of these qualifications.

Most of the participants will be selected from institutions that don’t offer opportunities for undergraduate research in data science. The National Science Foundation limits the number of students from the host institution (UVA) who can participate.

When will the program take place?

The residential portion of the program runs from June 9 (arrival) to August 1 (departure).

Research mentors may ask you to complete readings or online tutorials in Data Camp as soon as you accept your offer from the program.

Many students continue their involvement with their summer projects after the program ends, as part of a senior thesis or independent study, or as a volunteer. We are only able to support stipends during the summer.

Where is the program located?

The residential portion of the program will take place in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Most activities will take place in the Data Science Building (1919 Ivy Road) or the Center for Community Partnerships (201 W. Main Street).

Students will reside in the Bice House dormitory (583 Brandon Avenue).

Free local transportation via Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) and University Transit Service (UTS).
