Data science students at the University of Virginia took on Tech Night Takeover when it was held in early September, connecting with peers and employers at the UVA Career Center-hosted event that is now in its eighth year.

This year, the event focused on public interest technology, which is generally defined as the idea that technology should be used responsibly and serve the public good.

Tim Carroll, manager of software development at Appian, and Amrita Shankar, senior quality assurance engineer and technical team lead of CoStar Group, were the night’s keynote speakers.

“I had not considered the applications of data science for the public good, and it was great to see that our studies in the School of Data Science could be used to aid our communities,” said master’s student Kurt Samuels, who also serves as a student ambassador for the School of Data Science.

Following the keynote remarks, students had the opportunity to interact with a variety of recruiters stationed throughout Bryant Hall.

"It was incredible to see our School of Data Science students actively participating in the Tech Night Takeover. This event highlighted the diverse ways data science is applied across various industries, offering our students invaluable insights,” said Stephanie Joynes, assistant director of career and professional development at the School of Data Science.

"Now, it's time for them to thoughtfully consider how these experiences align with their individual career aspirations and intellectual goals while empowering them to create a meaningful life. Advising and supporting these students in this critical point of their journey is not just fun, it's really an honor,” Joynes added.
