Two School of Data Science Students Honored to Join the Raven Society
Karolina Naranjo-Velasco, a doctoral student at the School of Data Science, and August Lamb, a student in the residential master's program, were selected to join the University of Virginia’s Raven Society.
The Raven Society was founded in 1904 and is the oldest and most prestigious honor society at the University of Virginia. Taking its name from Edgar Allan Poe’s iconic poem, the Raven Society honors and promotes superior academic and extra-curricular achievement. To be selected as a Raven is a high honor, and graduate student nominees must demonstrate proven academic distinction in scholarship and research.
Naranjo-Velasco joined the inaugural class of the doctoral program in data science after earning her master’s degree in the field from UVA in 2022. Prior to that she received a master of laws degree in 2013 from the University of Seville in Spain and a her bachelor’s degree in laws in 2010 from the Industrial University of Santander in Colombia.
“I’m honored to be a member of the Raven Society, representing the Data Science School,” said Naranjo-Velasco. “This recognition of my leadership means a lot to me, particularly on Grounds.”
As an active participant in a variety of student groups, Naranjo-Velasco has engaged both as a member of the Charlottesville community and as a student, always seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute.
Naranjo-Velasco says embracing diversity and inclusion within the UVA community is crucial. Being a part of the Raven Society signifies membership in a group united by a passion for knowledge and a collective pursuit of wisdom. “We apply data and knowledge while never losing sight of our humanity. I'm enthusiastic about continuing to contribute and grow alongside my fellow members in The Raven Society.”
Lamb earned his undergraduate degree in computer science at UVA and is a student-athlete on UVA’s swimming and diving team. As one of the first Raven Society members from the School of Data Science, he says he is “looking forward to growing our School's ranks in the organization.” Acknowledging The Raven Society’s rich history of service to the University, Lamb is excited to contribute to the society’s efforts, adding, “Evermore, Go Hoos!”
Kevin Lin, doctoral student in data science and Raven selections chair for the School, presented the nominees to The Raven Society and said, “the Society voted unanimously for the induction of both Karolina and August.”
This semester marked the first time the School of Data Science Ravens were able to choose future Ravens within the School, beginning a new era of student self-governance. Lin says the Society’s overwhelming praise of Naranjo-Velasco and Lamb “reflects the high caliber of the School of Data Science student body and illustrates the significant University-wide support for our new school.”
