Zach JakocesZach Jacokes, a doctoral student at the School of Data Science, has received the prestigious honor of being selected to join the Raven Society at the University of Virginia. Jacokes joined the inaugural class of the Ph.D. in Data Science program after earning an undergraduate degree in psychology from Emory University. To be selected is a high honor, and graduate student nominees must demonstrate "proven academic distinction in scholarship and research."

The Raven Society was founded in 1904 and is the oldest honor society at the University of Virginia. Taking its name from poet Edgar Allan Poe’s iconic poem, the Raven Society recognizes academic excellence and outstanding contributions to the UVA community. As stated in the Constitution, the Raven Society aims “to bring together the best men [and women] in the various departments of the University for mutual acquaintance and for cooperation in their efforts to protect the honor and dignity of the University.” Over the years, the Raven Society has furthered its efforts by offering the Raven Fellowship and the Raven Scholar Program to support and promote superior extra-curricular projects and academic studies.
