The University of Virginia’s School of Data Science is pleased to announce that Luz Melo and Gia Smith, both students in the Ph.D. program, have been chosen as Community Data Fellows for the 2024-25 academic year.

The fellowship, which is now in its second year, is sponsored by the UVA Equity Center’s Equitable Analysis Initiative and the School of Data Science’s Office of Equity and Inclusion. The program supports a small group of UVA graduate students as they develop skills to practice data science that is engaged with the community and focused on equity.

Over the course of their fellowship, students will work with a community partner on a data project, with the goal of using data to promote equity and justice.

Melo joined the Ph.D. program at the School of Data Science in 2022. She received a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Smith also enrolled in the doctoral program in 2022 after completing a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Old Dominion University.

Last year, School of Data Science students Ethan Assefa and Silas Hayes were selected for fellowships. They graduated with master’s degrees in data science in May.
