Q: Tell us about your path to Data Science.

During my last semester at Georgetown, I undertook a computational project to fulfill my degree’s thesis requirement. As a result, I delved into the world of programming and statistics with the task of processing laser image data to better understand shear-thickening particle behavior.

As it turned out, I really enjoyed the process of translating the abstract principles I was working with into Python code, as well as translating those results back into usable conclusions. I quickly realized I wanted to pivot my career path in the direction of data science in light of this project, and so after graduating, I began to pursue it.

Q: What do you hope to do with a data science master's degree?

I hope to use my degree to help derive ethical solutions for the world’s current pressing problems at the intersection of business and technology. This stems from my passion for business, as well as my love for physics and technology, which is driving me to be at the forefront of these fields as a data scientist.

In addition, implementing an ethical framework is imperative for whatever projects I undertake, given that I want to use my degree to help create a better world for everyone in it.

Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?

Two aspects of the program have surprised me: how immersive it is and the amount of support available to each student.

Professors, and the cohort alike, are very passionate about the content we are learning, fostering relevant conversations about data science in and out of the classroom. The work we are assigned also aims to directly prepare us for a successful career, and so in that sense, I have genuinely felt like a data scientist in training.

Additionally, there is a lot of support for students academically, mentally, and career-wise, demonstrating the School of Data Science’s commitment to the success of its students.

Q: What has been your favorite class so far and why?

My favorite class so far has been Statistical Learning with Professor Michael D. Porter. I’ve enjoyed learning about the theory behind various statistical model types, as well as their use cases, benefits, calibration, and drawbacks. This class also allows us to put that theory into practice via our homework assignments, giving us relevant experience in model training and prediction.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a master’s in data science?

My advice is to do your research, understand the skill sets and experience employers are looking for in data scientists today, and understand the timeline of your data science career in retrospect to obtaining a master’s degree. Ultimately, deciding whether to pursue a master’s in data science or not is a life-altering decision, and so making that decision needs to be done with great consideration and care.

Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?

Some fun facts about me are that I am a part of UVA’s Salsa Dance Club, I know how to play the violin, and I studied abroad in Scotland for a semester!
