Meet Stephenson Scholar Khalid Bakhit

Khalid Bakhit

As part of the inaugural cohort of Stephenson Bicentennial Scholars at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Data Science, Khalid Bakhit is eager to begin the Bachelor of Science in Data Science program this fall. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, he views the scholarship as a source of encouragement and support, empowering him to pursue his goals with confidence and focus. He hopes to use this opportunity as a foundation for gaining knowledge that will allow him to make a positive impact in communities.

Bakhit’s interest in data science began with a J-term course where he saw the power of machine learning firsthand. Since then, he has been intrigued by the versatility of the field and its ability to be applied across disciplines. 

On Grounds, Bakhit is involved in a range of activities, including co-founding the Sudan Student Organization. With his creativity, community spirit, and the support of the Stephenson Scholarship, Bakhit is well-positioned to make the most of his journey in data science. 

Read on for a short Q&A with Bakhit about his path into data science, what inspires him, and how he hopes to make an impact.

Q: As one of the first Stephenson Scholars, what does this support mean to you personally, and how do you hope it will shape your journey in data science? 

This opportunity permits me to fully pursue my goals, knowing I have others backing and encouraging me to do so. I hope for this scholarship to be a means that aids to my pursuit of knowledge that allows me to make a positive impact in communities. 

Q: What sparked your interest in data science? 

My interest in data science sparked when I realized the computational power of machine learning models in my J-term class. 

Q: What specific aspect of data science intrigues you the most? 

The most interesting aspect of data science is its flexibility to be utilized in almost all fields. 

Q: What extracurriculars, clubs, or sports are you involved in? 

I am a co-founder of the Sudan Student Organization, a barber that specializes in Afro-hair, and a member of the Muslim Student Association. 

Q: What is a fun fact or two about you? 

I can juggle a soccer ball while lying down!
