Q: What sparked your interest in data science?
My interest in data science was sparked when I took DS 1001 and discovered that I could learn and apply technical, analytic, and communication skills, through a single subject. Data is so ingrained in our daily lives and almost everything we see or do is data driven. I decided I wanted to explore the behind-the-scenes of some of the world’s favorite apps, form of entertainment, games etc.
Q: How does it feel to be a pioneer in UVA's BSDS program as part of the first cohort? What are you most looking forward to during your time in the program?
It feels really refreshing, really. It’s so cool to experience something so new and be a part of shaping the program. Professors and faculty are constantly asking us for feedback on how our classes are, what programs we want to see implemented, and support all around. I’m really excited about how our classes will be career oriented and made to be applicable and hands-on. During my time in the program, I most looking forward to meeting so many different people - students, and faculty alike.
Q: What specific aspect of data science intrigues you the most?
To me, the most interesting aspect of data science is how everything can be visualized and made to inform in simple ways. There is an aesthetics portion to data science that I haven’t really considered, so I’m excited to learn about it in my Design I: Communicating with Data course this semester.
Q: How do you plan to use responsible data science for the common good?
Data science is so versatile in its use that I’ve been finding it difficult to home in on a singular interest. I’ve recently discovered a newfound interest in sports analytics having been an athlete most of my life. I would love to work in the field and use data to help athletes understand what methods are the most effective to prevent serious injuries. In a broader context, I would also love to work on analyzing healthcare data and making sure that it is secure, leaning towards the data science to cybersecurity pipeline.
Q: What has surprised you about the BSDS program so far?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the BSDS program as our program director, Brian Wright, and many other notable faculty members have worked tirelessly to integrate several concentrations for its students. Our four core concentrations of systems, analytics, design, and value are supported by other concentrations in different schools across Grounds - including economics, environmental science, kinesiology, and more!
Q: What extracurriculars, clubs or sports are you involved in?
I am Co-President of the Simple Charity chapter at UVA and Treasurer for Girls Who Code at UVA! I love playing flag football with my friends at VSA (Vietnamese Student Association), both in intramural games and at our own tournaments. I am also connected as a GCF member (Grace Christian Fellowship).
Q: What is a fun fact or two about you?
According to my Spotify Wrapped for 2024, I listened to a total of 89,840 minutes!
