Q: What sparked your interest in data science?
My interest in data science was sparked by its rapid growth, the need for creativity, and its emphasis on innovation. After taking the prerequisites, Foundations of Data Science and Programming for Data Science, I was excited by the endless possibilities regarding the applications of data science. I’ve always known I was more interested in STEM, but I struggled to decide on an area of study that truly played to my strengths. I wanted something broad and versatile that could be applied across multiple industries and aspects of life.
Q: How does it feel to be a pioneer in UVA's BSDS program as part of the first cohort?
Seeing the words "inaugural cohort" sparks a sense of pride and anticipation. I am excited that my peers and I have the opportunity to help make the world a better place through the power of data science. With great power, undoubtedly, comes great responsibility, so learning ethical practices and implementations is also of utmost importance. I am most looking forward to growing as a student during my time in the program through the incredible coursework ahead. Classes like Intro to Machine Learning and Systems 2 are ones I cannot wait to take!
Q: What specific aspect of data science intrigues you the most?
The fact that there is space for data science in virtually every industry is almost unfathomable to me. It’s amazing how, when I learn about the educational and professional experiences of professors or graduate students, no two paths are the same. Although many come from different backgrounds, data science is the common thread. I also entered UVA with a strong interest in Commerce and Economics, so knowing that I didn’t have to sacrifice one of my interests to pursue data science was reassuring. I don’t have to view data science and economics as mutually exclusive; instead, I can explore their intersections, which opens up numerous areas of interest that combine technical data science skills with economic theories and concepts.
Q: How do you plan to use responsible data science for the common good?
I believe that considering the impact of work on all stakeholders is crucial for determining whether an undertaking is ethical. I plan to adopt a consequentialist approach in assessing which projects and directions I want to pursue. While I’m not sure what this will look like just yet, I am currently intrigued by the idea of creating predictive models using data science to illustrate the effects of economic policy on various groups.
Q: What has surprised you about the BSDS program so far?
The BSDS program offers exceptional resources in many areas. Initially, I was intimidated because I never considered myself the best programmer in the room. However, each week before an exam or large project, the professors and TAs made themselves available through ample office hours. It felt like everyone was genuinely invested in my success, whether that meant understanding a concept or completing a coding task. Additionally, the resources are extremely accessible. I've scheduled multiple career center and academic advising appointments, and the meetings have always been encouraging and supportive.
Q: What extracurriculars, clubs or sports are you involved in?
I am a singer in the Virginia Women’s Chorus, the secretary of College Council and a support office in Honor. I am also a research assistant for the TeachSim lab and enjoy volunteering with dogs at the Charlottesville SPCA!
Q: What is a fun fact or two about you?
My least favorite vegetable is a beet. I have rewatched Grey's Anatomy at least three times.
