Q: What sparked your interest in data science?

I chose to do the Data Science major because of my love for problem-solving and interest in unraveling the stories hidden in vast amounts of data. I love how this field is interdisciplinary as it combines concepts from mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Whether it's through analyzing trends or developing data driven policies, my skills in Data Science will allow me to work across various domains.

Q: How does it feel to be a pioneer in UVA's B.S. in Data Science (BSDS) program as part of the first cohort? What are you most looking forward to during your time in the program?

It’s definitely a fun roller coaster to be on! Nothing can ever be perfect on the first try, but there are so many people around us to support us along this journey. Having the new building as a dedicated space for our program has made this experience even more special, as it brings together students, faculty, and professionals for learning and collaboration.

I’m excited to see the expansion of our program and how future students will contribute to the Data Science community at UVA. As a BSDS ambassador, I truly enjoy meeting prospective students and helping them learn more about the opportunities within data science. It’s rewarding to share my experiences and insights to help shape the future of the program. I’m also looking forward to diving deeper into my coursework and hope to be a part of meaningful projects that apply data science to real-world problems.

Q: What specific aspect of data science intrigues you the most?

I love how data visualization transforms complex datasets into clear and compelling interactive visuals that make information more insightful. Effective visualizations not only help uncover hidden patterns and trends, but also play a crucial role in decision-making across various fields. Whether it’s designing intuitive graphs, creating storytelling visuals, or exploring new ways to present data, I find it exciting to bridge the gap between raw numbers and meaningful insights.

Q: How do you plan to use responsible data science for the common good?

Through my work, I hope to advocate for transparency and inclusivity, ensuring that data is used to drive positive and equitable change. The ethical implications of data collection within marginalized communities is a problem that has persisted for decades. Addressing it requires efforts to challenge biased systems and implement practices that prioritize fairness and justice in data. By focusing on transparency and accountability, I aim to contribute to building data driven solutions that empower vulnerable populations.

Q: What has surprised you about the BSDS program so far?

I have found the overlap between my Design and Machine Learning classes unexpected. I didn't realize that the principles of effective communication would play such an important role in building and interpreting machine learning models. Though I am still early in the semester with these courses, the overlap has already given me a new perspective on the combination of technical and creative skills.

Q: What extracurriculars, clubs or sports are you involved in?

I serve on the executive board of the Black Student Alliance as the Vice-Chair for the Professional Development Committee and I am a Special Events Coordinator for the Ethiopian-Eritrean Student Association. I am also actively involved with the UVA Alumni Association as a member of the Second Year Council and the Student Alumni Council.

Q: What is a fun fact or two about you?

I was prom queen in high school!
