With support from the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science, in collaboration with the Center for Public Health Genomics, offers students Research Experiences in Genomics Applications of Responsible Data Science (REGARDS).
The Genomics Focus seeks students with undergraduate degrees in computer science, engineering, or statistics with particular interest in those who are underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Graduates of the Genomics Focus will be prepared to pursue further studies or careers in genomics research that will be data-intensive and collaborative.
Students in the Genomics Focus will complete all requirements for the residential master's in data science (MSDS) program, including the following:
- Complete their capstone project with the UVA Center for Public Health Genomics, exploring state-of-the-art genomics and computational approaches to complex human diseases
- Enroll in Genomics Focus electives:
- DS 6081: Genomics Foundations (2 credits, first semester)
Foundations of cellular and molecular biology as well as the underlying algorithms and execution of the most powerful genomics software tools. - BIMS 8601: Foundations of Computational Genomics (3 credits, second semester)
Foundations of computational methods for analysis of experimental data from genome, epigenome, and transcriptome sequencing experiments. Major topics include biological data types, algorithms, statistical and computational methods, and application areas in genomics and systems biology. - BIMS 8621: Statistical Genomics (4 credits, third semester)
Fundamental topics in statistical genomics with a focus on concepts and methods, specifically as it applies to public health genomics. Major topics include models of genetic inheritance, heritability analysis, linkage and association mapping in human and mammalian genomes, integrative analysis leveraging molecular genomics data, and genetic risk prediction modeling.
- DS 6081: Genomics Foundations (2 credits, first semester)
Additional Information
Nine students per cohort in the residential MSDS program may pursue the Genomics Focus.
These students will receive $11,886 in remission for tuition and fees for the three Genomics Focus courses: DS 6081 (3 credits), BIMS 8601 (3 credits), and BIMS 8621 (3 credits).
Students will travel to two conferences each year, both to present their research and as ambassadors for genomics data science as a profession. Included in the Genomics Focus is up to $5,000 per student to cover expenses related to these conferences, including registration fees, travel, and accommodations.
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify for the REGARDS Genomics Focus, a student must:
- Have an undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering, or statistics.
- Select “Yes, I would like to be considered for the REGARDS Genomics Focus” on the MSDS residential application for admission.
- Complete the subsequent short answer prompt (150 – 250 words) about why you wish to pursue the REGARDS Genomics Focus and how it will help you reach your professional goals.
- Be admitted to the MSDS residential program.
Admissions Process
Applicants interested in the Genomics Focus must apply to the MSDS residential program and are considered on the same holistic basis as all other applicants. Review the prerequisites, admissions timeline, and application instructions on the MSDS residential admissions page.
Up to nine students will be selected from each MSDS residential cohort to enter the Genomics Focus. Interested students are encouraged to apply in the Priority Round. Those selected for the Genomics Focus will be notified in their offer letter.
FAQs
Should I apply to the MSDS residential program in the Priority Round or the Regular Round?
We encourage those interested in the Genomics Focus to apply in the Priority Round. We will make the first round of offers in the Priority Round, and those selected will be notified in their offer letter.
Can I be admitted to the MSDS residential program even if I’m not selected for the REGARDS Genomics Focus?
Yes.
I have an undergraduate degree in a field other than computer science, engineering, or statistics. Can I still apply?
No, the Genomics Focus requires students to have an undergraduate degree in one of those three fields.
Do you require an interview?
No.
Do I need any additional prerequisites?
No.
How much tuition remission will I receive?
Students selected for the Genomics Focus will receive remission for tuition and fees for the three Genomics Focus courses (9 credits): DS 6081 (3 credits), BIMS 8601 (3 credits), and BIMS 8621 (3 credits) in the amount of $11,886, divided over three full-time terms in the program.
I will be studying as an international student on the F1 Visa. May I pursue the Genomics Focus?
Yes – the Genomics Focus is open to all applicants who have an undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering, or statistics.
