With support from the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science, in collaboration with the Center for Public Health Genomics, offers students Research Experiences in Genomics Applications of Responsible Data Science (REGARDS).

The Genomics Focus seeks students with undergraduate degrees in computer science, engineering, or statistics with particular interest in those who are underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Graduates of the Genomics Focus will be prepared to pursue further studies or careers in genomics research that will be data-intensive and collaborative.

Students in the Genomics Focus will complete all requirements for the residential master's in data science (MSDS) program, including the following:

  • Complete their capstone project with the UVA Center for Public Health Genomics, exploring state-of-the-art genomics and computational approaches to complex human diseases
  • Enroll in nine credits of Genomics Focus courses in molecular and computational biology

Additional Information

Nine students per cohort in the residential MSDS program may pursue the Genomics Focus.

These students will receive $11,886 in remission for tuition and fees for the nine credits of Genomics Focus courses.

Students will travel to two conferences each year, both to present their research and as ambassadors for genomics data science as a profession. Included in the Genomics Focus is up to $5,000 per student to cover expenses related to these conferences, including registration fees, travel, and accommodations.
