Who:  This event is open to all members of UVA and the greater community. Light refreshments will be provided.

Where:  In-person attendees will be in the Capital One Hub on the first floor of the School of Data Science building at 1919 Ivy Road. Zoom attendees should use passcode 747713 to join. No registration required.

The School of Data Science's Office of Equity and Inclusion is excited to host the “Data Science is for Me Speaker Series.” Our first guest is Dr. Moiya McTier, an astrophysicist and folklorist, who will talk about being both a scientist and a creative, and how those aren't necessarily different paths. Importantly, you don't have to be great at math or a genius with computers to be a data scientist. The real trick is to be curious about the world and systematic in your approach to solving problems.

Join Dr. McTier in a conversation about the basic skills used by scientists, and how these are shared by creatives. She will share about her journey in making a career that feeds all parts of herself. Dr. McTier's event will be co-sponsored with Virginia Folklife
