The School of Data Science and the University remain committed to helping students with demonstrated need navigate the increasing costs of higher education. Tuition and fees are set annually by the University of Virginia Board of Visitors in early spring.

The University meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all in-state and out-of-state students through a combination of grants, work-study, and need-based loans, and limits need-based loans. Students who have demonstrated need should not incur increased costs associated with pursuing a Data Science education. Visit the Student Financial Services site for more information.

The School of Data Science has two need-based scholarships for students in the B.S. in Data Science major:

  • The Stephenson Data Science Bicentennial Scholars Fund will directly support the Stephenson Scholars Program for students in the undergraduate major at the School of Data Science, both for need-based scholarships and internship support funds. Stephenson Scholarships will meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for up to five students per incoming B.S. in Data Science cohort. Additionally, any student in the B.S. in Data Science may apply for funds dedicated to experiential learning and internship support.
  • The Bright Family Bicentennial Scholarship, awarded to one student per cohort by Student Financial Services, toward tuition and fees.

The Stephenson Scholarship meets 100% of demonstrated financial need, allowing recipients to fully engage with their undergraduate experience — and to graduate debt-free.

The Stephenson Data Science Bicentennial Scholars Fund will provide need-based scholarship support to outstanding students in the B.S. in Data Science major for years to come, ensuring accessibility for students from all walks of like to pursue careers in data science. Recipients of the Stephenson Scholarship will have the opportunity to fully engage with all the enrichment activities offered by UVA and the School of Data Science undergraduate experiences, including participation in relevant internships and practicums — and to graduate debt-free.

Selection of both types of Stephenson Scholars will be centered around the following guiding criteria:

  • Passion for applying data science to improve all aspects of global society
  • Ability to engage with a rigorous STEM curriculum
  • Desire to build an inclusive community of students with experiences and perspectives from the widest range of socioeconomic backgrounds

Stephenson Scholarships:

  • Meet 100% of demonstrated financial need, offsetting loan and/or work-study requirements
  • Are for six semesters, effective from the fall of the recipient's first year in the School and throughout their time in the BSDS program
  • Provide funds for a new laptop for their first semester in the major

Recipients of the Stephenson Scholarship will also have a mentor who works in the field, individualized career journey support, and access experiential learning funds to support expenses related to internships, research, and other opportunities in the interdisciplinary field of data science.

All students admitted to the B.S. in Data Science (BSDS) with qualifying financial need are eligible for consideration of the Stephenson Scholarship. There is no additional admissions or application process. Those awarded the Stephenson Scholarship will be notified in their admissions offer letter. Up to five students will be selected from each incoming BSDS cohort to receive the Stephenson Scholarship. The scholarship is for six semesters (fall and spring), pending continuous enrollment and successful completion of coursework. If you have questions about the scholarship or the BSDS application process, reach out to sdsadmissions@virginia.edu

In addition to scholarships, there are experiential learning and internship support funds available to any student enrolled in the BSDS. Recipients of the experiential learning and internship support funds will be chosen based upon passion for the field of data science and demonstrated success in the program. All Stephenson Scholarship recipients are also eligible for these funds. Current students will be provided with information on how to apply for these funds after BSDS Orientation.

Jobs for Current Students Close Icon Close

The School of Data Science hires upper-division B.S. students as Instructional Assistants and Graders each semester; learn more on the Instructional Support page. BSDS students may also apply to be Student Ambassadors, or pursue a range of other opportunities at the University of Virginia, including federal work-study positions through Student Financial Services. Part-time research opportunities vary and tend to be best suited to upper-division students.

Jobs for students typically range of 2-20 hours per week, depending on the position. These are paid positions with an hourly wage, and do not result in tuition remission, and are not guaranteed. Current students may apply for jobs within the School of Data Science in the weeks preceding the start of each semester.
