High school students in the Commonwealth of Virginia are invited to compete in the Data + Society Challenge.
The Data + Society Challenge invites Virginia high school students to explore how data science can improve lives, strengthen communities, and tackle society's biggest challenges. Open to students in grades 10 through 12, the annual competition encourages participants to think critically, analyze data, and communicate meaningful insights while learning about one of today's fastest-growing fields.
Whether you're curious about artificial intelligence, healthcare, climate, education, sports, or public policy, data science offers powerful tools for making a difference. No prior experience is required. Individuals and teams of up to five students are encouraged to participate.
Hosted by the University of Virginia School of Data Science, the Data + Society Challenge introduces high school students to the possibilities of data science through a hands-on competition centered on real-world issues.
Each year, participants receive a challenge prompt and data set to analyze before developing and presenting their findings. Along the way, they'll gain experience with critical thinking, data storytelling, and collaborative problem solving while exploring how data can be used for the common good.
The challenge is designed to inspire the next generation of data scientists and help students discover future academic and career opportunities.
The Data + Society Challenge is made possible through the generous support of our sponsors and partners. Interested in sponsoring a future challenge or contributing a data set?
