Program Dates

The Data Justice Academy will be held from Monday, May 29, 2023 to Friday, August 4, 2023.

Participants are required to attend in-person for the entire program period, including all research team obligations, seminars, workshops, field trips, and any additional programming or events. 

The University of Virginia observes Juneteenth and Independence Day. Programming will not be scheduled on these holidays.

Participation Details

Through generous support by program sponsors, there is no cost to participate in the Data Justice Academy. Selected students will receive:

  • $600/week stipend
  • on-campus housing (double-occupancy rooms) at the University of Virginia
  • reimbursement of travel expenses

Additional funds are available on a competitive basis for travel costs to present at research conferences.

Health and Safety

Applicants are advised to review UVA policies regarding COVID health and safety. Note these policies are updated periodically based on local infection rates, Virginia public health requirements, and UVA Health Systems monitoring.

Students experiencing symptoms should report to Student Health for testing and inform Dr. Scholz so that an isolation dorm room can be provided.


The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, VA. Located two hours by car from Washington, DC, and 45 minutes from Richmond, VA, the city is accessible by car, train and plane. Charlottesville Albemarle Airport (CHO) serves flights with Delta, American, and United airlines. Charlottesville also has Amtrak and Greyhound stations. Participants can also easily get around the city using Charlottesville Area Transportation bus and trolley lines, University of Virginia bus transportation, Uber and Lyft.  


Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and just over a two hour drive from the nation's capital, Charlottesville is home to nearly 50,000 residents and one of the most beautiful places in America. It has all the charm of a historic college town with the conveniences and energy of a larger city.
