1:45 p.m. | The Graduate

Datapalooza 2019 will feature a series of one-hour panel sessions around a variety of topics to showcase the depth and breadth of data science research opportunities. These panels offer an opportunity to help guide data science research at UVA and beyond.

During the first half of the panel, each speaker will present on their research around the topic, followed by a moderated session including comments and questions from the audience, then a discussion led by the moderator with the panelists. The second half of the panel will be used for a dialog with the audience around key question(s) that will inform future research directions for the School of Data Science. A notetaker will provide a summary that is intended to inform school research direction and be publicly posted after the meeting.

DATA & BUSINESS ANALYTICS

Ballroom | Ninth Floor (The Graduate)

Data science methods, including statistics, econometrics, and machine learning, are having a profound impact on business strategy and data driven decision making. For instance, customer analytics has shifted from understanding consumer behavior snap shots to explaining and predicting complex real-time customer journeys. This panel will explore the opportunities and challenges related to data analytics and AI in business domains such as marketing.

  • Ahmed Abbasi (moderator), Associate Dean, Analytics Initiatives; Murray Research Professor; Director, Center for Business Analytics; Director, M.S. in Business Analytics, UVA McIntire School of Commerce
  • Rajkumar Venkatesan, Ronald Trzcinski Professor of Business Administration, UVA Darden School of Business
  • Kristin Moody, Associate Vice President, Analytics Partners
  • Jade Kim, Consultant, Analytic Partners

DATA & BIOMEDICINE

Game Room | Second Floor (The Graduate)

This session will focus on research in the field of infectious disease. Topics discussed will include the effect of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on low-income people living with HIV, and the use modeling techniques for forecasting the spread of infectious disease and the evaluation the government-, and policy-, level response to infectious diseases in specific populations. Discussion will focus on ways in which this field and data science intersect, and how data science practices and techniques are, and can be, leveraged in the study of global infectious disease.

  • Abigail A. Flower, Assistant Professor, UVA Schools of Data Science and Engineering & Applied Science
  • Alison Criss, Associate Professor, UVA School of Medicine; Director, UVA Global Infectious Diseases Institute
  • Kathleen McManus, M.D., MSCR, Assistant Professor, UVA School of Medicine; Associate Program Director, Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program
  • Bryan Lewis, MPH, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor, Network Systems Science and Advanced Computing Division, Biocomplexity Initiative & Institute

DATA & THE CITY

Sheepdog Cafe | First Floor (The Graduate)

Cities are becoming smarter. Sensors track climate, light, energy, pollution, water, noise, motion, traffic flows, crime, and live community engagement. Repositories, both open and closed, publish community data. Smart devices aggregate into smart and responsive buildings, smart roads, smart infrastructure, and smart, beautiful, and human-centered urban environments in which we live, work, and play: Next Cities. What are the questions, challenges, and science of specific techniques in spatial- and community- data that we need to reconcile to understand these and their implications for us in the built environment?

  • Eric Field, Director of Information Technologies and Lecturer, UVA School of Architecture;
  • Bev WilsonAssociate Professor, Urban and Regional Planning and Informatics, UI Urbana-Champaign; soon to be Associate Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning, UVA School of Architecture
  • Mona al KhafifAssociate Professor, Architecture and Urban and Environmental Planning, UVA School of Architecture
  • Lucas Ames, Founder, Smart Cville; Associate Director of Organizational Systems and Technology, Global Online Academy
