A Week in the Life: Online MSDS Student Cameron Preasmyer
I am currently in my first semester of the Online M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) program at the University of Virginia's (UVA) School of Data Science.
I was first introduced to data while studying econometrics during my undergraduate program. It was through that exposure that I found out I thoroughly enjoyed working with data and began looking for ways to build a career in the sector. When I found out about the Online MSDS program at UVA, I knew it would be the perfect fit for my goals.
Beyond academics, I am also employed part-time as an Admissions Ambassador for the MSDS Online program, and I also volunteer as a Research Assistant with Assistant Professor of Data Science Natalie Kupperman.
Weekly Schedule
For academics, I like to take the day following classes to do a light skim of all the materials during the upcoming week. On Thursday and Friday, I do more intensive studying and try to complete my homework before the weekend. If there is any information that I’m having trouble retaining, I look more into it during the weekend.
The Monday and Tuesday before classes I make a point to both look over the new materials for the week and do any pre-work to discuss in class. Beyond that, I like to keep the brunt of my responsibilities encased in traditional working hours.
Cohort Community
When I enrolled in the online modality, I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of engagement from my cohort or from the faculty. However, it was very quickly made apparent that the School of Data Science is very engaged with its students, and does a great job of both facilitating and encouraging collaboration and connection within the School.
As an online student who lives close to Charlottesville, I wanted to have a feel for ‘campus life’ while also keeping the schedule and modality of the online version of the program. I wanted to participate in events, research networking opportunities, and clubs on campus. I was surprised to find that these opportunities are just as available to me as they are to residential students at the School of Data Science. It was through the faculty and the general infrastructure of the program that I was able to participate in a research opportunity so quickly in the program.
Beyond the program, I’ve found that most other students in the cohort are very collaborative and active both inside and outside the virtual classroom. In the short time we’ve all been in the program, we have already established study group sessions, group chats for classes, and more. It’s a very welcoming community and one that promotes growth among its members.
Overall, my experience as an Online MSDS student has been everything that I hoped for.
Personal Time
Beyond my academic and professional life, I like to make time to explore my hobbies and travel. I love to hunt and fish, and recently made a trip out to Alaska to backpack around Denali National Park, and do some salmon fishing during the Chinook salmon run on the Kenai Peninsula.
I also enjoy exploring local hotspots such as wineries and breweries, scenic routes, and concerts and shows. I believe each community has its own unique entertainment niche, and as someone who has lived in many towns across America, I like to explore those areas of the community.
