Q: Tell us about your path to data science.
I began my journey in Bioinformatics, initially using Python to analyze genetic data and taking classes that involved some wet lab work. During this time, I took a lot of Python, bioinformatics, and biology courses. Last summer, I interned with Virginia Tech’s Data Science for the Public Good program (DSPG), where I applied my bioinformatics skills on a larger scale for the public good. This is when I realized that I wanted to expand my knowledge of machine learning, statistical analysis, and programming to tackle real-world public challenges.
I started exploring different post-graduate paths which is how I found UVA’s Data Science master's program. I immediately knew the small cohort setting and accelerated timeline was the best fit for me to prepare me for a career in Data Science.
I want to use the skills I learn in this program to contribute to non-profit or government projects and continue to learn and leverage data science as a tool for meaningful impact. Virginia Tech’s DSPG program has a partner program with UVA which has opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, I recommend checking out their work!
Q: What do you hope to do with a data science master's degree?
I hope to use my data science skills to contribute to projects that have a meaningful impact, particularly in the non-profit or government sectors. I’m passionate about using data to solve real-world problems, and I would love to explore the different applications of data science in different fields. Ultimately, I want to be involved in initiatives that leverage data to create positive change in society.
Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?
One thing that has surprised me the most about the MSDS program is how closely we can work with the faculty and staff here. Everyone is always looking for feedback about events and almost everyone has an open-door policy. I enjoy seeing the change we can make as students through different leadership positions and by talking to the faculty and staff.
Q: What are you involved in outside the class?
I enjoy exploring Charlottesville as well as the rest of Grounds in my free time. There are so many fun free events to attend around Charlottesville such as outdoor painting classes and shows. I find these events on UVA’s University Events calendar. I also enjoy playing pickleball or exploring different restaurants with friends.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a master’s in data science?
My advice is to be open to new challenges and take advantage of this unique learning journey. A master’s in data science has endless applications so it's important to try different things until you find a good fit for you. I would also recommend networking with your peers and professors because everyone has valuable insights and unique experiences to share.
Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?
A fun fact about me is that I discovered a new species of Siphoviridae bacteriophage using use bioinformatics tools and named it ”CheetoDust.” I also like to foster animals whenever I have the time to do so.
