Meet Stephenson Scholar Huda Mohmand

As part of the inaugural cohort of Stephenson Bicentennial Scholars at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Data Science, Huda Mohmand is eager to begin the Bachelor of Science in Data Science program this fall. A native of Woodbridge, Virginia, she sees the scholarship as both encouragement and opportunity, inspiring her to pursue her goal of using data science to help improve the world, particularly her home country of Afghanistan. 

Introduced to the field through the Foundation of Data Science course, Mohmand is especially interested in its ethical dimensions, focusing on the importance of keeping people, communities, and values at the heart of data-driven decisions. Active in several student organizations at UVA, she balances academic ambitions with community involvement. With her passion for service, global perspective, and the support of the Stephenson Scholarship, Mohmand is ready to make an impact as part of this historic first class of scholars.

Q: As one of the first Stephenson Scholars, what does this support mean to you personally, and how do you hope it will shape your journey in data science? 

I am extremely grateful for this support, as it only encourages and motivates me more to do my absolute best whilst in the BSDS program. This support also calms any worries I may have had about the program and tuition, and makes me anticipate this fall more than anything now. 

I hope the support as one of the first Stephenson Scholars shapes my journey in data science by allowing me to meet my goals towards improving the world, specifically my own country, Afghanistan, more easily and efficiently. 

Q: What sparked your interest in data science? 

The Foundation of Data Science course at UVA, where I learned what data science was and how it can be used for the world, is what sparked my interest. 

Q: What specific aspect of data science intrigues you the most?

The Value aspect that reminds me of ethics and to keep humans and their emotions as well as what is right and wrong in mind is what intrigues me the most.

Q: What extracurriculars, clubs, or sports are you involved in?

Muslim Student Association, Young Feminist Party at UVA, McGuffey Tutoring 

Q: What is a fun fact or two about you? 

I lived in Afghanistan from 2nd to 5th grade, and I am one of eight siblings.
