Jess Reia Named UVA Research Communications Fellow

Assistant Professor of Data Science Jess Reia has been selected as a 2022 University Research Communications Fellow. Offered annually through the Office of the Vice President for Research, 10-12 faculty from across the University of Virginia are chosen as Fellows to receive science communication training. Throughout the year, they will learn how to present their research clearly and concisely through presentations, website, articles, and on-air interviews. Fellows also receive personalized coaching with the VPR research development team and in-depth media training.

Reia joined the School of Data Science in 2021. They are a free culture activist, working on public interest advocacy and research that addresses power relations between technologies, people, and spaces. Their main areas of research include science and technology studies, critical data studies, intellectual property, urban governance, and night studies. Reia holds a PH.D. and an M.A. in Communication Studies from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and a B.A. in Public Policy from the University of São Paulo (USP).
