How to Get Involved in Student Self-Governance, Leadership, and Life at UVA

Hello! My name is Jonathan Swap, and I am a Student Ambassador in the Master’s in Data Science Residential Program at the School of Data Science.
I attended the University of Virginia (UVA) as an undergraduate and poured myself into the organizations and leadership opportunities available throughout my four years. While leading large organizations was often challenging, those experiences shaped me into the curious and passionate student I am today.
My involvement culminated in the incredible opportunity to live on the Lawn during my Fourth Year, exposing me to every corner of student life and leadership at UVA. It became such an integral part of who I am that I successfully ran for President of the Graduate Data Science Council for the 2024-2025 year. I’m excited to share my perspective on student leadership and club involvement at UVA to help prospective students find their own paths.
What is Student Self-Governance?
A defining feature of the University of Virginia is its culture of Student Self-Governance (SSG)—the expectation that students can independently lead and manage their own organizations. This philosophy is fundamental to UVA’s educational model, empowering students with hands-on experience in leadership, organization, collaboration, and communication.
Unlike most universities, UVA gives students real responsibility, allowing them to shape their organizations and the broader community. While different types of organizations have varying levels of oversight and interaction with UVA administration, all provide valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth.
What Does It Mean to Be a Student Leader?
At UVA, student leadership is more than just a title—it’s a way of life. Here, one of the first things we ask each other isn’t “What do you do for work?” but rather, “What are you involved in?”
The beauty of UVA is the sheer number of clubs and leadership opportunities waiting to be explored. Throughout my time here, I engaged with a variety of organizations—from cultural groups to leadership programs to kindness-focused journalism. Each experience helped me learn more about myself.
One of the best aspects of UVA’s student organizations is that you can be as involved as you want to be. Whether you’re looking for a casual commitment or a leadership role, there are always opportunities to grow. Even in my final year, I found new communities—like the Beach Volleyball Club, which I joined just last semester. Despite graduating this spring, that group has brought me joy and connection, proving that it’s never too late to try something new.
Why Should I Get Involved?

Balancing academics, work, and extracurriculars can be daunting, and many students wonder whether they should add another commitment to their busy schedules. While there are pros and cons to every decision, I firmly believe that getting involved is one of the most rewarding choices you can make.
Yes, leadership roles require time and effort. They may not come with financial compensation. But the benefits—real-world experience, personal growth, lifelong friendships, and the chance to make a lasting impact—far outweigh the costs.
UVA graduates stand out in the job market because of the skills they develop through student leadership: problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and resilience. My experiences in various organizations not only helped me embrace my Brazilian heritage but also gave me opportunities to lead and create meaningful change across Grounds and in the Charlottesville community.
Tips and Tricks for Getting Involved
- Embrace Uncertainty. Not every club will be the perfect fit, and that’s okay! Explore different options until you find what resonates with you.
- Be Curious. Ask people about their experiences and passions—you never know what opportunities might come your way.
- Start Small. You don’t have to lead an organization right away. Join as a member, get a feel for the community, and grow into leadership roles over time.
- Find Your Niche. Not everyone will join Greek life, student government, or an a cappella group—and that’s great! UVA is about forging your own path.
- Stay Open-Minded. The experiences that challenge you the most often lead to the greatest personal growth.
At the end of the day, UVA is what you make of it. The more you put yourself out there, the more you’ll learn—not just about leadership, but about yourself. So, take the leap, get involved, and embrace the journey ahead!
