Q: What sparked your interest in data science?
Math has always been my favorite subject, but I never knew how I could use math in a career that was interesting and exciting. Data science is the perfect combination of math, problem solving, and real world impact. I can now use math not just to analyze data, but to also create meaningful change.
Q: How does it feel to be a pioneer in UVA's BSDS program as part of the first cohort? What are you most looking forward to during your time in the program?
Being a part of UVA’s BSDS first cohort has been an amazing experience so far. It feels great to know that our professors want to help us succeed both in and outside the field of data science. Being the first class of this program allows us to help shape the degree into what we want it to be, and it is so exciting to see what new opportunities are available to us in the coming semesters. I am most looking forward to choosing a concentration and going deeper within that specific content of the major as I get closer to graduation.
Q: What specific aspect of data science intrigues you the most?
I am very interested in the ethical side of data science, like examining how algorithms might reinforce societal inequalities or disparities in representation. I think it is such a critical aspect of data science that I can’t wait to dive deeper into.
Q: How do you plan to use responsible data science for the common good?
I plan to double major in Data Science and Women, Gender & Sexuality. After I graduate, I hope to merge my passion for both fields and shape my career around helping to eliminate certain biases that take place within the data science field to ensure more inclusive algorithms and methods of data analysis that can create positive social change.
Q: What has surprised you about the BSDS program so far?
The nicest surprise about the BSDS program is the small class sizes and the community that has been built from it. My peers have turned into my friends, and I look forward to going to class everyday to see them and learn beside them.
Q: What extracurriculars, clubs or sports are you involved in?
I am on the UVA Cheerleading team and I love cheering on the Hoos! In addition to this, I am a counselor and on the coordinator board for Kesem at UVA, which is a free week-long camp for kids whose parents have/or had cancer. I also work as the Director of Policy and Prevention for the UVA Pi Phi chapter.
Q: What is a fun fact or two about you?
I have been skydiving and bungee jumping!
