Open Rank Professor of Data Science, Tenured or Tenure Track develop internationally recognized research programs, compete for external funding, teach and mentor students across undergraduate and graduate programs, and contribute to the school’s interdisciplinary curriculum spanning analytics, systems, design, and value. Faculty collaborate broadly within SDS and across the University to address complex societal challenges through data-driven discovery and innovation, helping to shape the culture and direction of a pioneering academic enterprise.
Open Rank Professor of Data Science, Academic General Faculty Teaching Track support the School’s undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs. Teaching-track faculty play a vital role in advancing data science education through innovative instruction, curriculum design, educational scholarship, and student mentorship. They engage in pedagogical research, contribute to externally funded projects, and shape the academic culture of a dynamic and growing school. The school seeks candidates with expertise across domains such as data systems, design, ethics, and analytics, and welcomes applicants who bring experience in areas including generative AI, health data science, data and society, sports analytics, and data science in education.
- Quantitative Foundation Associate or Distinguished Full Professor of Data Science is supported by a foundational gift from the Quantitative Foundation. This endowed position seeks an exceptional scholar with internationally recognized research achievements and transformative contributions to the field of data science. The successful candidate will lead a high-impact research program, secure external funding, teach and mentor students across undergraduate and graduate programs, and contribute to shaping the school’s academic vision and reputation. Ideal candidates will demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, and advising, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to advancing the responsible use of data for the common good.

Associate Dean for Research (ADR) in the School of Data Science (SDS) will provide strategic leadership and vision for the research mission of the school. This role involves defining research directions, fostering interdisciplinary research, managing research administration, developing new research initiatives, and supporting faculty and students in achieving high-impact scholarly outcomes. The ADR reports directly to the Dean, is part of the Dean’s Cabinet, and collaborates with other academic and administrative leaders within and across schools as well as the University of Virginia Office for the Vice President for Research (VPR) to enhance the school’s research enterprise.
