Spend Your Summer Exploring Data Science and AI
UVA Summer Data Science Bootcamps are in-person programs for middle and high school students interested in learning about data science and artificial intelligence.
Held at the UVA School of Data Science in Charlottesville, Virginia, the bootcamps introduce students to topics such as machine learning, generative AI, data visualization, training data, bias, and AI ethics through hands-on activities and collaborative projects.
No prior coding, data science, or artificial intelligence experience is required.
What Do Students Learn at a Summer Data Science Bootcamp?
Students explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning systems use data, why the quality of training data matters, and how human choices can influence AI outcomes.
They also learn about topics such as generative AI, data visualization, prompting, bias, and the ethical implications of AI.
Along the way, students tackle questions such as: How does a machine learn? What makes an AI system reliable? How can data help us understand a problem? And what role should people play in determining how AI is used?
The goal isn't simply to teach students how to use AI. It's to help them understand what happens behind the screen so they can become more informed and thoughtful users, creators, and problem-solvers.
