UVA Data Science Bootcamps are in-person programs for middle and high school students to learn the fundamentals of data science and artificial intelligence.
Offered by the University of Virginia School of Data Science in Charlottesville, Virginia, the programs use hands-on activities, creative problem-solving, and collaborative projects to help students understand how data and AI work and how they affect the world around them.
Students do not need prior data science or artificial intelligence experience to participate.

What Do Students Learn at a Data Science Bootcamp?
Students learn how data is collected, organized, analyzed, and used to answer questions. They explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning systems learn from data, how generative AI works, and why data quality and human decisions matter. Depending on the program, students may explore:

Who Can Attend a UVA Data Science Bootcamp?
UVA Data Science Bootcamps are designed for middle and high school students. Eligibility varies by program and year. Most bootcamps require no previous coding experience, unless specified.
Programs are developed by the UVA School of Data Science's Office of Community Affairs and Applied Learning as part of the School's commitment to expanding access to data science education and introducing young learners to data science through inclusive and interdisciplinary approaches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do you provide housing for the bootcamp?
- Our programs are non-residential, and we do not set up or coordinate housing for participants. The Virginia Guesthouse is adjacent to our building if you are looking for a nearby place to stay, with many other options in the area.
Q: Do you provide transportation for the bootcamp?
- We do not provide transportation to our programs. There are several bus stops nearby, including the Gold, Green, and Silver lines run by UVA Transit and Route 7 through Charlottesville Area Transit.
Q: My child has a school-issued laptop. Will that work for the laptop requirement?
- Yes, a school-issued device, including Chromebooks, are suitable for the camp.
Q: Where should I park?
- We are located next to the Emmet/Ivy Garage located at 123 Emmet St N. The hourly rate through ParkMobile is $3. The Virginia Guesthouse has free 30 minute parking in a designated zone that guests are welcome to use for drop off and pick up.
Q: Where should my child park?
- Participants who are driving themselves to camp are eligible to receive a parking pass or reimbursements for ParkMobile. If your child plans to park in the garage, please let us know at least a week before camp starts so we can set up the pass or discuss reimbursements.
Q: Do you offer financial aid?
- We offer financial aid for our summer bootcamps. Further information is provided in the registration forms.
