Russell is a leader in advancing data for public good, promoting access to data science and strategic community partnerships. Russell drives initiatives that leverage the talents and expertise of School of Data Science (SDS) faculty, staff, and students to promote accessibility and relevancy of data science to a broad community of stakeholders. Under her leadership, the School has implemented fellowships and programming that serve both students and nonprofit/local government partners in using data to drive greater impact, as well as significant outreach to K-12 populations.
In addition to her leadership role at SDS, Russell serves on multiple local advisory boards, represents SDS on the President’s Council on UVA-Community Partnerships and has contributed to national initiatives through organizations like the National Association of Counties and the International City & County Management Association.
Prior to her role at UVA, Russell spent almost a decade in local government across multiple roles affording her the opportunity to develop her expertise in policy development, strategic leadership, and large-scale community engagement.
Russell is a Ph.D. Candidate in Constructed Environment at the UVA School of Architecture, where she explores how change-making is facilitated or resisted in local land use. She also holds a Masters in Business Administration, an M.A. in Community and Economic Development, and a B.A. in Sociology.
Her career has been guided by the wisdom of community advocates and change-makers, reinforcing her commitment to data for the public good.
