Seolmin Yang is a postdoctoral research associate at the UVA School of Data Science. His research interests lie in technological innovation from an evolutionary perspective, uncovering the mechanisms that drive breakthrough discoveries. By analyzing large-scale academic and patent data, such as bibliographic records, citations, and collaboration patterns, he integrates insights from the science of science, policy, and management to understand how knowledge translates into innovation. His current work examines the commercial pathways that link scientific research to technological impact.
Prior to joining UVA, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Observatory on Social Media at Indiana University Bloomington and at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, where he was also affiliated with the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO). He earned his Ph.D. in Science and Technology Policy from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
