UVA Data Points Podcast: Data Meets Art
When Data Meets Art
In this episode of UVA Data Points, we explore the intersections of data, art, and storytelling. Our guest is Nathalie Miebach an internationally-recognized data artist who joined the School of Data Science in October 2025 as their inaugural artist-in-residence.
Using materials like reed and paper, Miebach transforms complex datasets into woven sculptures and musical scores, inviting us to view and even hear data in new ways. Joining her for this episode is Alex Gates, assistant professor of data science at the University of Virginia. Gates serves as co-chair of the School's Art and Artifacts Committee, and his research examines how patterns of connection shape creativity, innovation, and discovery.
Nathalie Miebach
Miebach's work sits at the intersection of art, science, and storytelling. Using basket weaving techniques, she translates data from sources such as weather patterns, climate models, and ocean tides into intricate three-dimensional structures. Many of her pieces also include musical scores that allow data to be heard as well as seen, offering new ways to interpret and connect with complex information.
