School of Data Science Faculty Recognized for Research at UVA

The University of Virginia announced the 2024 recipients of the Research Achievement Awards, and several School of Data Science faculty were recognized. The Research Achievement Awards, awarded annually by the University, recognize 100 top researchers as the best and brightest of the year based on sponsored funding, publications, and awards. 

  • Aidong Zhang, Professor of Data Science, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering, was honored with a Distinguished Research Award for her contributions to the fields of bioinformatics and machine learning.
  • Associate Professor of Data Science Mar Hicks was acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to the arts and humanities.
  • Professor of Data Science and Psychology Paul Perrin was honored as one of the top 25 researchers receiving the highest amount of funding at UVA in FY'24.
  • Wajih Ul Hassan, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Data Science, was acknowledged in the list of researchers who achieved notable recognition and acclaim in their respective fields at a national level. 

Five faculty researchers were nominated by the School of Data Science dean for above and beyond research endeavors:

In addition, Steven Boker, Professor of Data Science (by courtesy) and Professor of Psychology, was honored with a Distinguished Research Award for his contributions to research and expertise in longitudinal data modeling and dynamical systems analysis.
