Q: Tell us about your path to data science.

I started the M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) online program soon after transitioning from being a middle school math teacher to a teacher education researcher. Initially, in my role, I managed the implementation of large randomized control trial experiments with pre-service teachers. I hoped that with my master’s training, I would be able to contribute more to the analysis of the quantitative data I had collected.

As my programming skills developed, I soon took a more active role in the planned data analysis. Additionally and unexpectedly, my MSDS coursework gave me exposure and training to think about ways to use machine learning techniques to augment our lab’s data analysis. I feel very proud of the unique data science perspective I can now bring to our lab and am excited to think about novel ways to utilize our data to support teacher development.

Q: What do you hope to do with a data science master's degree?

I hope to contribute to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that will support teachers’ skill development. I feel incredibly lucky to work with experts in the field of teacher education who have a strong commitment to equity. I hope to create tools that will maximize impact for all practicing and future teachers.

Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?

I have been most surprised by the spirit of collaboration that has been fostered in my classes and embraced by my cohort. The structures put in place by the program to encourage group work really enhanced the learning experience. I value the relationships that I’ve built with my classmates and professors.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a master’s in data science?

I would advise anyone considering an MSDS to embrace the idea of being a data scientist broadly. I struggle to fit the mold of a typical data scientist. It is so important to remember that just like there is not only one path to data science; there is certainly not only one path to consider once you’re here. This field is evolving so rapidly; data science applications are everywhere.  And… sign up for Towards Data Science. This blog site has been one of the best resources for keeping me informed of the latest breakthroughs in the field while I learn the foundations.

Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?

I have two dogs that often have brief cameos in class and in my free time, I love to practice and teach yoga.
