Pair Your Major with the Power of Data
As technology continues to reshape industries, one University of Virginia (UVA) student is preparing to meet the future head-on. Fourth-year economics major Jackson Haiz says he chose the Minor in Data Science to expand his skills and stand out in a rapidly changing market.
“My decision to minor in data science is spurred by the recent and innovative changes to how corporations operate because of artificial intelligence (AI),” shared Haiz. “Being an economics major and a data science minor could help give me an edge in traversing this rapidly changing economic landscape.”
A Popular Path to Big Opportunities
Haiz isn’t alone in seeing the value. With more than 701 students enrolled, Data Science is the most popular minor at UVA, reflecting strong demand for data skills across every field of study.
He recognizes that data fluency will be essential in the workplace of the future. “Economics and data science will be increasingly connected as the years go on,” emphasized Haiz. “The School of Data Science has prepared me to feel confident in succeeding in my career.”
Through the minor, Haiz has built technical expertise in multiple coding languages and statistical methods — skills that enhance his coursework and make him more competitive in internships and job searches.
Real Projects, Real Impact
Haiz also gained hands-on experience through an internship with the UVA School of Data Science, where he applied his learning to real challenges.
“Through programs like Power BI, Tableau, R, Python, and SQL, I was able to deliver useful and practical insights that provide answers to complex and nuanced questions,” said Haiz. “The skills I learned through the minor allow me to succeed in the present and feel confident in the future.”
Preparing for a Data-Driven Career
Looking ahead, Haiz sees data science expanding his opportunities across industries – from finance and consulting to business analytics and economic forecasting. Combining economics with data science gives him the ability to interpret information, influence decision-making, and contribute innovative solutions.
