Association for Computing Machinery Honors Professor Aidong Zhang

Aidong Zhang is the Thomas M. Linville Professor of Computer Science, with joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and School of Data Science.

The University of Virginia's School of Data Science is pleased to announce that professor Aidong Zhang is the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Computing Machinery. 

In its announcement, the association cited Zhang's "impactful leadership and lasting service to the broad communities of bioinformatics, computational biology, and data mining."

In addition to her role with the School of Data Science, Zhang is the Thomas M. Linville Professor of Computer Science at UVA, with an additional appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. 

Her research focuses on machine learning, data mining, bioinformatics, and health informatics, and she has authored hundreds of research publications in those areas. 

Zhang was one of seven experts honored by the Association for Computing Machinery for their contributions to the computing field. The winners were chosen by their peers.

Zhang has been member of the association for 29 years. Her award citation noted the wide-ranging impact she has had on the research community during her career, including her role in founding the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Bioinformatics.
