The Brain, Body & Networks Lab
The Brain, Body & Networks Lab focuses on understanding individual differences associated with neurodivergence and neurological disorders such as autism and epilepsy, and with risk for adverse health outcomes (e.g., cardiovascular disease) through a holistic approach that views the brain as a central hub interacting with whole-body physiology. To achieve this, we combine multimodal brain data — including neuroimaging (MRI, fMRI, dMRI), electromagnetic recordings (EEG, stereo-EEG, MEG), and transcriptomics — with peripheral physiological and blood-based measures (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, insulin, IL-6, and CRP). Given the heterogeneous and high-dimensional nature of this information, we typically develop and apply statistical and predictive frameworks that integrate information across data modalities to characterize relationships within and across biological systems. Moreover, a major emphasis of the lab is modeling the brain as a network, capturing both pairwise interactions and higher-order relationships to characterize complex patterns of its organization. Our ultimate goal is to understand how brain and body systems interact, how these interactions vary across individuals, and how they relate to physical health, neurodivergence, and disorder.
