Walking of the Lawn is a University of Virginia tradition where graduates walk from the Rotunda down the historic Lawn and gather at Old Cabell Hall for the ceremonial speeches from the president of the University, deans, and guests of honor. Students must register in advance and are allotted guest tickets. The event is broadcast live with several viewing areas available across the University.
The School of Data Science Diploma Ceremony is on the same day following commencement ceremonies on the Lawn. This event is for data science graduates and includes recognition of each graduate, speeches by faculty and staff, award announcements, and a reception for graduates and their guests. Graduates are required to register, and guest seating is limited. Eligible graduates will receive more information to their UVA emails.

Do online M.S. in Data Science students attend graduation?
Yes, we encourage all online M.S. in Data Science students to join us for graduation the spring following their graduation term.
How do I apply to graduate?
Students must apply to graduate through the Student Information System (SIS). See SIS FAQs for instructions.
Can you mail me my cap and gown?
No, the University does not mail regalia. The UVA Bookstore typically extends hours for graduates to pick up their regalia on the weekend of graduation. More information on cap and gown pick-up can be found on the Office of Major Events website.
Should I share my post-graduation plans?

How do I stay engaged after graduation?
Graduates are encouraged to stay connected through the Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM). UVA students would love to learn from your experience. Joining VAM is a great opportunity to build meaningful connections with the UVA community. These relationships can also benefit you directly, including sharing industry specific knowledge, exploring career paths of interest, and strengthening your coaching and leadership skills.
