National Academies Workshops to Explore AI Risk Management

The rapid evolution and expansion of artificial intelligence promises to reshape society in the years ahead. However, along with the promise this technology offers comes risk, given the complex human and organizational factors involved in AI implementation.
How can society ensure a wide range of stakeholders are involved in AI system design? What qualitative and quantitative methods can most effectively evaluate AI systems? How will AI impact organizational cultures?
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are organizing a series of public workshops this summer aimed at exploring these and many other questions pertaining to the coming age of AI.

Mona Sloane, an assistant professor of data science at UVA and an expert on AI and society, is a co-chair of the event.
Sloane also leads Sloane Lab, which conducts empirical research on the implications of technology for the organization of social life.
The National Academies' panel discussions will feature diverse groups of speakers, ranging from academia to industry.
