In an increasingly data driven society, the mission of the new School of Data Science will be to train high-quality, diverse, responsible practitioners and leaders in the field of data science, conduct interdisciplinary and collaborative research that provides societal benefit, and work with communities, near and far, to provide benefit through data science applied to meet their own needs.
The School of Data Science – UVA’s 12th school and the first established since 2007 – is made possible by a $120 million gift from the Quantitative Foundation, as well as funding from the University and the state. It will position UVA as a global leader in efforts to improve society through teaching and research based on the powerful, emerging field of data science
Envisioned as a “School without Walls,” it is designed as an open ecosystem that fosters interdisciplinary research, teaching, and partnerships across the University, with the private sector, and with government and community organizations.
Modeling the Future of Data Science
As the Data Science Institute plans the transition to a School of Data Science, our mission, centered in education and research, remains the same. And our strategy in fulfilling that mission is embodied in four key values.
