What Is the Average of a Jalapeño and a Habanero?

One of the simplest and most basic statistics one can compute from a set of data is the average. But is it really that simple? We will have an elementary lesson about computing different types of averages.
With the exception of a few brief stints, Aaron Abrams has been an academic mathematician since getting his PhD in Mathematics from UC Berkeley in 2000. Originally trained as a topologist, his research interests span a variety of mathematical fields, including geometry, combinatorics, probability, occasional applications, and recently illustration.
